Broadway Musical Research Project (Due: 2/16/16)

Your group is responsible for researching a specific musical and creating a poster with information to present to the rest of the class. Each group in the class must research a different musical, so be sure to check with the teacher before beginning your research. After you finish researching, your group will create a large poster to help present your information to the rest of the class.

The poster must include the following information:

1. The title of your musical
2. What is the musical about? (summarize the plot)
3. Biographies of the primary writer(s) of the musical (there is often more than one writer)
4. Did the musical win any Tony awards? How long did the show run on Broadway?
5. Biographies on at least two (2) lead actors/actresses from your musical
6. Pictures of the actors/actresses and writers; Pictures of show posters; etc.
You will have ONE (1) day to research information, and two (2) days to create your poster and presentation.

As you research, keep in mind the following:

  • When you are looking up actors and actresses, remember to look for the original Broadway cast. Many musicals have been filmed as movies. We are not researching movies for this project, however.
  • Research and create biographies for the prominent people that wrote and composed the musical. Have they written any other musicals? Are they well known? What else have they done in their careers?
  • Research what the general reaction of the public was toward this musical. Did the musical get good reviews? Did it win any Tony Awards that year? How long did it stay on Broadway? Is it still showing today?
  • Research the original Broadway cast members. Who were the original cast members? Did they go on to perform in any other musicals? Had they performed on Broadway before this particular musical?
  • Each member of your team should have a specific job(s). You will need to list all group members and their jobs for Mrs. Hartley.

Evaluation:

  • The title of musical displayed clearly on poster – 5 points
  • Summary of the musical – 10 points
  • Biographies of the primary writer(s) – 10 points
